Catch EPD quality issues before verification.

It depends on what you use.

The EPD quality scan checks the EPD against ISO 14025, EN 15804+A2 or ISO 21930, and the programme operator's own rules, plus our own quality checks. It finds the right checks itself and reads what is visible in the EPD: transparency requirements, numbers that must add up, and basic sanity checks of reported values.

A project, the check before verification for manufacturers or the Verifier Workspace for verifiers, also checks the background report and the product PCR or c-PCR, and compares the numbers in the EPD with the background report.

Lodestellar is independent of any programme operator, ECO Platform, and any LCA or EPD software provider. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

EPDs as PDF or Word files, drafts or already published. In a project you also upload the background report and supporting documents. Lodestellar reviews documents, not LCA models.

Digital EPD files such as ILCD+EPD are not supported yet.

Lodestellar is primarily designed to be used as a first-pass review during EPD creation, before formal verification or publication, although it can be used at any stage of the process, including on published EPDs.

Identifying potential quality issues as early as possible helps teams produce higher-quality EPDs more efficiently and reduce the cost, time, and risk of resolving issues later.

The aim is to help users better understand what high-quality EPDs look like and highlight aspects of the document that may benefit from improvement. Lodestellar supports greater transparency and accountability for quality across the sector by strengthening the work of EPD professionals, not replacing independent verification or programme operator decisions.

The tool is smart, but not infallible. It runs on a large language model with well designed guardrails and carefully crafted checks. Use it as an additional quality layer, but still use your own judgement.

We are developing internal benchmarking methods to track how the tool performs and improves over time. Our goal is to publish information about its accuracy and progress as the system evolves.

Independent verification remains essential, and Lodestellar is designed to support better EPD quality and understanding, not to replace the judgement of experienced verifiers.

We've tried that a lot ourselves. Even with hundreds of individual prompts, it just doesn't match the quality of a dedicated EPD quality review. We've carefully designed Lodestellar to handle EPD quality reviews as efficiently, thoroughly, helpfully (and still as affordably) as possible, which is not as simple as training a large language model on the requirements, but ensuring every possible quality issue is codified in the right way. We are constantly developing that so we can keep raising quality beyond compliance.

Lodestellar is independent of all EPD programme operators and also all LCA software. Their own tools work slightly differently. They are mostly focused on checking the integrity of LCA calculations, avoiding major issues, and validating the process. Lodestellar thoroughly checks and advises on EPD quality issues in ways that even go beyond compliance.

Your data is kept safe and secure, and we delete it whenever you ask. Review data is deleted automatically, usually about a year after the review. Your specific company data is not used to train AI models. We may use anonymised, aggregated usage data only to improve our services. If you explicitly agree in the app, we may also use the wording of a review remark you write to improve our shared automated checks. Both uses are outlined in our Terms and Conditions.

We started out as Lodestar, back at Digital Construction 2022. That's a star used for navigation, typically the North Star. In modern usage, a lodestar can be anything that serves as an inspiration or guide. For example, verified environmental impacts now serve as the lodestar for growing a competitive, sustainable business.

To launch our tool, we needed a truly unique name, however. So we kept lode, the old English word for path, way or course, and we added 'stellar', which still refers to a star but also emphasises quality. Lodestellar is now a trademark of Lodestellar OÜ.
